2022 TONY WALKER: San Angelo. As a high school and collegiate athlete Tony pursued the sports of soccer and track and intended to pursue those sports as a Coach. At Texas A&M, he was required to take a class in: The Teaching of Gymnastics with instructor Ernie Kirkham. Ernie encouraged him to apply to a local gymnastics club owned by GAT Life Members Nikki and Patrick Yaeger to sharpen his skills in a new sport. The Yaegers sparked an interest in competitive gymnastics and the fun of gymnastics through their Gymnastics Club and the Summer Texas Gymnastics Camps. In the Spring of 1985, Texas A&M hosted the 1985 Texas High School Gymnastics State Championships in G. Rollie White Coliseum and it was then that he learned that Texas High Schools offered the competitive sport of Gymnastics. In 1986 for his Student Teaching assignment, he was assigned to Annette Reynolds, Gymnastics Coach and PE Partners/Physical Education instructor at Richardson High School where he was surrounded by the other district Gymnastics Coaches, Denise Coates, Greg Larimer and Sam Siedel. In 1987 this then soccer/track athlete ended up at San Angelo Central High School with GAT Life Member and Coach, James R. White and became the first Girl’s head coach where he still is today. Tony has completed 36 years as the Program Director and Head Coach at San Angelo Central High School. Since his arrival in 1987, Tony’s teams have achieved 25 District Titles, 25 Regional Titles, 12 State Titles, and 1 National Title, and currently holds the Team Scoring Record for girls along with 7 individual State Record Holders and 32 individual State Champions. He has been named Region 3 Coach of the Year 8 times, State Coach of the Year 9 times, and Girls National Team Coach twice. Most recently in 2014, he was selected as Teacher of the Year for the San Angelo Independent School District. San Angelo’s program not only supports high school gymnastics but as a part of the program, gymnasts learn to teach in the Community Education Program where athletes have gone on to become club and high school coaches, club owners, national team coaches, program directors, and judges. He is grateful to the many coaches and administrators that showed support and influenced him along the way. He couldn’t have had success in his career without the love and support of his family, wife Sherrie and sons Cameron and Braden, and daughter Addison along with his coaching brother Kern Arrott. Elected in 2022.
